Field Health Reports Now More Intuitive

Paul Hoff 13 September, 2016

For the last few months we have worked with several growers and crop consultants to optimize the colors that we use on our Field Health Reports.  Our goal was to make them more intuitive and to make it quicker to find the problem areas on a field. The new colors we selected communicate overall field health quicker than our prior color scale. Today we are making this new color scale available to all our users. You can choose to remain with our historical colors or select the new look.

How do I choose?

If your FarmLens account was created after September 12, 2016, you don’t have to do anything to use new colors, all new accounts default to the new color scale.

For existing users who want to switch, you will need to do so by logging into your FarmLens account, and selecting “Your Account” then “My Profile.” On the resulting screen, look for the option to select the “Color Lookup Table for NIR”. To switch to the new scale, click on the color band on the right side, then click “Save Preferences.” Any new Field Health Reports you create will use the new colors. Any Field Health Reports already created will remain unchanged and will retain the historical colors.

Why did we change?

Although the colors used for any NDVI or relative NDVI are arbitrary, our tests with many different color scales found that colors that map closely to natural ones are understood much more readily than those that do not use a natural palette. The new colors we selected are those that tested the best. They replace our historic scale which had more vivid colors and which transitioned between the colors quicker. Our testers found that results produced using the new colors look more natural and are easier to interpret. We hope that you find the same.

For those of you who have grown attached to the old colors, or simply like that one better, feel free to use that scale instead.
