Online retailer and other new campaign supporters to help promote drone safety during holidays

WASHINGTON —Know Before You Fly, which promotes the safe and responsible use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly called drones is pleased to announce that Amazon and more than 20 other companies, associations, and government organizations have signed on to the education campaign in the past month. In addition to Amazon, the latest supporters are Agribotix, American Helicopter Society International, Inc. (AHS), ASSURE FAA Center of Excellence for UAS (Mississippi State University), Avion Solutions Inc., Aviation Systems Engineering Company (ASEC), Bridge City Robotics, Buddy RC, Drone Universities, Eagle Eye Drone Service, Ehang, FSX Chicago,, Hobby Saver, Hover, International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Matanuska-Susitna (Alaska) Borough Council and School District, the National Retail Hobby Stores Association, Parallax, SF Drone School, Seiclone Surveys, Tower Hobbies, the Toy Industry Association, and Traxxas.

“Amazon has long been a leader in promoting safe and responsible UAS use,” said Brian Wynne, president and CEO of the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems (AUVSI). “This commitment will ensure consumers who turn to Amazon to look for the latest in UAS technology will also learn where and how to fly.”

In November 2014, the retailer launched the Fly Responsibly Drone Store with support from AUVSI and the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). Consumers who buy UAS from Amazon’s Fly Responsibly Drone Store have access to Know Before You Fly information and guidelines. Amazon’s support of Know Before You Fly is part of its ongoing commitment to worldwide UAS safety programs.

“We are pleased to work with Amazon to ensure basic safety information is easily accessible to their customers,” said Bob Brown, president of AMA. “Together, we can work to ensure that everyone receiving a drone this holiday season knows how to fly safely and responsibly.”

Other campaign supporters have announced efforts to promote Know Before You Fly in their products. UAS manufacturers Ehang and Parallax and retailer Tower Hobbies will include Know Before You Fly safety fliers in every shipment.

Know Before You Fly was launched last December by AUVSI and AMA in partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration to provide newcomers to UAS with basic safety information. With the addition of Amazon and the other new supporters, there are now more than 50 retailers, manufacturers, and distributors of UAS, as well as organizations representing the manned aviation community, helping to promote the campaign.
