Meet the Agribotix Intern: Ryan Friedman

At Agribotix, we've been lucky to have already developed a robust UAV, The Hornet, that ran on a the user friendly, open source 3DRobotics software platform. This has allowed us to spend most of our engineering cycles developing sensors and software to interpret the results specifically for precision agriculture. However, there have been a number of hardware projects we've been kicking around for months now that we just didn't quite have the resources to tackle. Until now...

When Ryan’s dad told us he couldn’t walk across his son’s room because of all the RC planes scattered about we knew we had to hire the guy. Unfortunately, at the tender age of 17 we don't get him for long as we have to return him to the clutches of his teachers at Boulder High School at the end of the summer. Nevertheless, he has been tremendously valuable for Agribotix working hard for us all summer building and testing aircraft and flying farms.

His pet project has been developing a multirotor that will serve as a companion to the Agribotix Hornet UAV that will automatically scout problem field areas as identified through NDVI and DVI image processing techniques. He’s also been tasked with developing novel launch systems. His concept of driving a lawn tractor into the bed of a moving pickup prior to plane release wasn’t one of his better ones…

When not flying airplanes for Agribotix, Ryan loves to fly his own fixed wings and multirotors, with first person view (FPV) flying being his passion.  He’s even working on a project with Boulder wildlife rangers to check prairie dog traps remotely using his quadcopter and FPV video transmission.  Ryan is also a skilled long-distance mountain bike racer and a musician.
